The music scene on Chapel Street is world class and seeing music performed live will always be the best way to take it in. Oh, how we missed it.
New and old. Whether you’re standing shoulder to shoulder, comfortably seated, or leaning up against the bar- there’s nothing like experiencing live music. Here are a few of our favourite Chapel Street Precinct gig spots.
A theatre and music powerhouse in the heart of the precinct. Chapel Off Chapel has been producing and presenting innovative and incredible independent and professional theatre, live music, jazz, comedy, cabaret, dance and art for years. There’s something different to watch every week of the year. Musicians love playing here for the setting in the glorious, intimate chapel – the natural, beautiful acoustics, the right there with you audience set-up, and just the feels, you know? Put it this way, Coldplay and Foo Fighters have played here. If you haven’t taken in a live show at Chapel Off Chapel, you might not be fully aware of what’s on your doorstep.

OneSixOne is ready to bring live music to Chapel Street with OneSixOne Live, a weekly live music night held on Wednesdays. The venue has traditionally operated as a club, primarily offering DJ sets, although it has hosted Australian legends such as Wolfmother and Presets. During their time in lockdown, they’ve been planning and renovating to prepare themselves for their return, bringing a new face with them.

The tunes flow as freely as the beers at Melbourne’s original Irish pub. But don’t be put off by the ‘Irish pub’ title – the live music pumps all weekend in the classic ‘pub acoustic’ style. It’s not all laid back, you can also catch one of the most successful cover bands in Melbourne, the legendary Adam 12 upstairs! With live music, four nights a week, ‘Bridie’s’ is a pure pub, in every sense of the word.
462 Chapel St, South Yarra
Revs is a local legend for a reason, and live music is part of the story. Live music and DJs pump out tunes almost all week long. Revolver is a melting pot of musical styles, with original live music from up and coming rock bands, great tunes in the back bar and bangin’ beats ‘in the cage and on the stage’. Take a risk, head to an album launch, grab the band’s new single and discover some of the most interesting music Melbourne has to offer.

Galah has resident DJs on the one’s and two’s throughout the week, every week. Grab a small batch bottle from the shelves, scurry upstairs and take a sip (or ten) in a high-ceiling warehouse setting. This joint used to be a panel beater’s storage space, but you’d never guess looking at the leather and velvet upholstered booths or the sultry cocktail menu. Sip on an Aussie inspired aperitif – maybe the Outback Sheila (finger lime and saltbush margarita) and enjoy sweet sounds while the pro’s spin the night away.
216 High St, Windsor
You may have visited a million times before (most likely for a bevvy and cheap pizza) but time it right and you can treat your ears to some sweet tunes as well. Lucky Coq is a local favourite for low-key vibes and a relaxed atmosphere. With their ‘always fun, always free’ motto, they’re entertaining locals pretty much every night of the week. A slew of hot DJs play electronic, throwback tunes, house, party, and even vinyl only old-school hip hop and RNB.

The Temperance Hotel is ‘Chapel Street’s favourite local’, even if they do say so themselves. Amongst a huge mix of entertainment options during the week, Thursday, Fridays and Sundays are when the live music springs to life.
426 Chapel St, South Yarra
They’re doing things a tad differently by bringing the party tunes ‘acoustic style’ early Saturday evenings, the Imperial uses live music to pump up the weekend’s biggest party night. DJs using sax and other live elements fill the dancefloor as the night moves along.
522 Chapel St, South Yarra
Chasers has been operating as a music destination for almost 40 years and is one of Melbourne’s most loved venues with a 24 hour licence. A D&B PA system has been installed, lighting has been updated and a new stage has been fitted. The iconic Saturday club night ‘Poof Doof’ continues, however, the other six nights a week are open to host events and live music as Three Eight Six.
386 Chapel St, South Yarra
