There’s no doubt mindfulness has been the buzzword of 2018. Heaps of your fave celebs and high level CEO’s are now swearing by it to help slow down and be present in this unquestionably busy and fast-paced world we live in. Things like meditation and yoga compliment mindfulness and can help you step into the now.
I dunno about you, but all of this chat can conjure up images of white robes, sound bowls and a sh*t load of incense. You may have already thrown this into the ‘too hard’ basket, just like keeping your succulent alive or getting to the gym once a year. Don’t worry, this guide is really just to help you take some space and time away from the grind and feed that precious soul of yours.
So, (don’t) close your eyes, take a deep breath in and take a look at seven places to get zen on Chapel Street.
Vinyasa Style Yoga is one of the greatest doses of zen medicine going around. At Barre Body you’ll work up a sweat as you move through the sequence and finish up the class with a beautiful guided meditation or savasana to see you floating out the door. Their Barre classes offer a peaceful workout that’s a little more pacey and powerful, fusing the poise of pilates with the flowing sequencing of yoga for that all encompassing wellness vibe. Bare feet mandatory.

Helping you find your inner zen since 2000, AYA is an institution in the Chapel Precinct. Their mission is to help raise your consciousness and maximise spirituality. Check out their mindfulness meditation class from 7.30pm – 8.30pm Monday nights and become the most mindful version of yourself. They also offer one of Australia’s most recognised teacher training programs, for those of you wanting to spread those wings even further.

Not what traditionally pops to mind when thinking of zen, but a bit of cardio can clear your head just as much as a still meditation can. Core Candy is all about upbeat music and pink neon vibes. A boutique fitness joint, their signature HIIT workout is a high intensity, full body strength and cardio workout. No class is ever the same so you will continue to be challenged and encouraged. Be prepared to sweat.

Be Still in Grattan Gardens
Grattan Gardens is a nice little pocket of nature to check out and check into to find your zen. Here you can read a book, listen to a meditation podcast or rub the belly of one of the frequenting pooches. Or, let the Vitamin D sink in, push your toes into the green grass, sit and be still. Because remember, doing nothing, is doing something.
40-50 Grattan Street, Prahran
Focusing on your diet is an amazing way to help your mindfulness pursuits. You are what you eat, remember? Now, we all love chocolate, but if we’re really going to get our groceries green and be confident we won’t be distracted by the Coles chocolate mud cake on sale, Prahran Health foods is where to go. We’re health newbies too, but these guys are here to help, the chocolate may taste naughty, but it’s ever so nice. So, get your spoon out of the nutella jar, it’s time to get holistic about your health!

This place is good for floating beginners and pros alike. If you haven’t floated before, it’s pretty simple. You enter a room and lock the door, get nakey, have a quick rinse then hop into a white tank containing twelve inches of water with 550 kg of dissolved Epsom salt. Water is heated to skin temperature, meaning the sensation of water on your skin will slowly fade away. Now, pull the cover shut, turn off the lights and just float. The buoyancy created by the dense Epsom-salt solution removes the feeling of gravity, bringing you close to an experience of total weightlessness. It doesn’t get more zen than this guys. Orchard also offer Infrared Sauna and Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Zen, here you come!

Dancing can be a great way to let go of inhibitions and an even greater source for inner zen. Whether you were born with the rhythm of MJ or you have trouble simply clapping to the beat, no matter which camp you fall into, The Space has you covered. Take up a dance class, meet new people & get down right jiggy with it. Getting out of your comfort zone can also leave you feeling empowered and with a new found confidence. Everyone knows dancing is good for the soul!
