Lads, get excited! The Spring Racing Carnival is upon us & it’s the only time of year when it’s socially acceptable to let loose, while looking like a well-groomed adult with their shit together.

I’m here to make sure you nail the latter.

Before we push on, I have some breaking news… I recently attended a lunch celebrating the start of the carnival where the VRC Chairman, Amanda Elliott, formally announced that men will no longer be required to wear socks in either the Birdcage or Members Area at Flemington. This will come as great news to those (myself included) who enjoy showing off a little ankle.

With that in mind, you & your man squad should be extremely Instagramable with the below looks from Chapel Street…

Derby Day

If 2017 has brought out the adventurous side in you, it’s only natural to want to show off your winter white ankles. While doing so though, it is essential to have a complementing pair of shoes & pants. I’d always go a loafer over a lace up shoe when letting the ankles free – there’s just something NQR with a lace up & naked ankle. Aquila’s ‘Lockett Black’ leather loafers are definitely worth investing in, not only will they take your race day outfit to the next level, but the Italian made shoes will service you year round with a pair of chinos & white shirt to your Friday night work drinks.

What I love about the Melbourne Cup Carnival is that it’s socially acceptable to be a little daring & a bit of a show off. With this in mind, why not go for a pop of pink? To make sure you don’t rock up looking like a texta, I’d recommend Jack London’s Sloane jacket. The pastel tone is sure to turn heads & still looking masculine. For the real risk tasker, I’d add in JL’s ‘Brommel lapel pin’ with a white or navy pant. Now that you’re fully equipped for a day of pink fun, you have full permission to #RealMenWherePink on Instagram.

I may be late to the party, but if I had to pick a ‘go to’ store for men’s racing outfits, it’d be MJ Bale. In a world saturated by plaid suits that are often hit & miss, MJ Bale certainly have ‘hit’ with their ‘Fortunato Navy suit’. If you love plaid gents, you’ve struck gold. Paired with a light blue shirt & navy tie, you’ll  look like a solid 10.
If you’re easing yourself into the world of plaid, you have the option of purchasing the jacket or trousers separately & simply match with a pair you already have. PLAID ON.

Let’s keep the MJ Bale love going! If you’re a little left of centre when it comes to making outfit choices then the Indaco denim jacket is for you. Without looking like a full weirdo, this is an exceptional denim style of jacket which boasts a subtle floral print. If worn with a crisp white shirt & pocket square, the print will be sure to get a few remarks from fellow race goers. If you’re concerned about looking a little on the dark side, a sand coloured chino or white pant could brighten up the outfit.

A shop not to be overlooked this spring racing season is Country Road. If you’re the kind of guy that doesn’t want to break the mould or bank with his races look, a simple blue chambray jacket is the way to go. Country Road’s is a light weight, linen jacket that will go with just about anything. If you’re on a budget, pair it with something you already have in your wardrobe & you’ll still hit the track looking effortlessly mint. And no, we won’t judge you for being a little on the boring side…

Remember to have fun with outfit, make the most of ‘no sock’ look now that you’re not breaking rules & once you’re race ready, be sure to tag us on Instagram @ChapelPrecinct! Oh, and have a drink or four for me.
