It seems like only yesterday it was acceptable to dust off your school formal suit. You know, the one you wore to your first three job interviews, half of your mates 21sts and to your cousin’s wedding.  Throw it on, jump on the no. 57 from Flinders to Flemington, and have a cracker of a day at the races. Thankfully, times have changed, and those days are behind us. Oh, you were planning on wearing old faithful? This is awkward…

So if you’re amongst the 90% of guys who google ‘what should I wear to the races?’ and always wonder ‘How the hell do those guys always look sharp AF?!’ read on, my friend. We’re gonna make it easy for you. Not only what to wear, dress codes for the different days (yeah – that’s a thing) but also where to get it. Think of us as your Spring Racing Fairy Godmother. Hang on… what’s the guy version of that?

First of all, let’s go through the dress codes for the different race days.

Derby Day

Traditionally black and white (don’t rock up in a royal blue suit like this idiot did his first year #rookie). You can get away with grey, but keep it pretty simple. If you want to mix it up, maybe go for a bolder print shirt. Keep your tie a solid black, or subtle striped but DO NOT wear a bow tie. 3 years ago called & they want those back, please.

Melbourne Cup

Keen to wear something a little more out there? This is your day to shine! Suit-wise, go for a cream (careful though, I have a feeling it’ll be a popular choice this year) – or a darker/navy blue. Match it with a red or green pocket square or tie for a bit more colour.

Oaks Day

Even though it’s ladies day, it doesn’t mean we still can’t get amongst it. Go for floral prints, or plaid, and salmon or even purple is acceptable. Whatever compliments your lady’s outfit. Just don’t put on one of her dresses… Or go for it man, you do you.

Stakes Day

The most relaxed day, dress code wise. I don’t mean a tank and triple pluggers, but feel free to go for a patterned suit. Beige, emerald green or grey will also work. You could even go tie-less if you’re feeling bold. Think more Portsea Polo or cocktail and you’ll be sweet.

Dress like a #boss

Always a winner when looking for a classic suit with an abundance to choose from. The staff are amazing whether you’re down for an in-depth fashion chat, or just utter the phrase ‘make me look good’. It’s the perfect stop to get sorted for Derby Day.

If you’re looking for some solid Cup Day options, MJ Bale is where it’s at. You won’t find a better quality suit for a better price, and there’s enough choice that you won’t be running into guys rolling the same getup everywhere you look. Go for a drop 8 fit, for that slim look, guaranteed to keep you looking classy, even after a big day at the track.

Want something that stands out, but still stands the test of time? Dyonsu always have a great range of unique blazers, shirts and suits to get Oaks Day outfit on point. If you’re not really sure what you’re looking for, the guys will have more combo’s lined up for you than an arvo of smashing Tony Hawk Pro Skater on Playstation back in the day.

453 Chapel St, South Yarra

There’s a reason Sam has been on Chapel for over 20 years. The man knows a good suit. From classic to a little more out there, he’s always ahead of the curve. You won’t find anything ordinary here, everything is on fleek with a unique spin to make sure you stand out from the pack. Whether it’s Derby, Cup Day, Oaks or Stakes – he’s got you covered.

447 Chapel St, South Yarra

While a great suit is important, it’s nothing without the right accessories to make it pop. Ties, tie bars, pocket squares and socks – Declic is literally accessory heaven. The best part? If you’re like most of us, and have zero idea – just bring your suit in! The guys will have you walking out like you just stepped off the runway at New York Fashion Week.
