What’s New on Chapel Street This August

Cookies worth queueing for. A Scandinavian bathhouse. Six padel courts. Late-night steak and Martinis. And a neighbourhood café with a story behind its name.

Chapel Street does not sit still for long.

This August has brought a particularly good mix of new arrivals across South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor — whether your idea of a good time involves an ice bath, a freshly baked cookie, a padel racquet or a very late dinner.

Some have only just opened their doors, while others are fresh enough that you may not have made it through the door yet.

Consider this your update.

NAVIA BATHHOUSE — PRAHRAN

Chapel Street now has somewhere specifically designed to make you slow down.

Navia Bathhouse has brought its Nordic-inspired bathing ritual to Prahran, opening a sprawling new wellness space at 233 Chapel Street built around a simple rhythm: heat, cold, rest, repeat.

And there are plenty of ways to do it.

The Prahran bathhouse has five different heat experiences, including a teepee sauna running up to 100 degrees, a silent sauna, steam room, magnesium pool and infrared sauna. Then comes the cold: three different plunge temperatures ranging from cold to properly cold.

For anyone who wants to take the recovery mission further, there’s also red-light therapy, while the onsite café covers coffee, smoothies and fika when sitting somewhere warm with a snack feels considerably more appealing than another ice plunge.

It’s open daily from 6am until 10pm, meaning a pre-work sauna, post-work soak or two-hour weekend disappearance are all very much on the table.

BROOKI BAKEHOUSE — SOUTH YARRA

Melbourne asked for Brooki.

Brooki responded with a permanent Chapel Street bakery open 12 hours a day.

Brooki Bakehouse opened at 574 Chapel Street on 7 August, giving the Brisbane-born bakery its first permanent Chapel Street home and Melbourne another reason to completely abandon the idea that cookies are an afternoon-only activity.

The chunky cookies might be the social-media stars, but the South Yarra store goes well beyond them, with cakes, cupcakes, brownies and other baked treats coming out of the kitchen throughout the day.

And importantly, they’re baking across the day rather than doing one early-morning batch and hoping for the best.

Doors are open from 10am until 10pm, seven days a week.

Which means yes, Chapel Street now has a legitimate answer to “where can I get a cookie at 9.45pm?”

Useful information.

DEAR LUCIA — PRAHRAN

There’s a new neighbourhood café at 199 Chapel Street, and this one comes with a little family history.

Dear Lucia describes itself as a café with a European heart — somewhere breakfast is allowed to stretch into lunch, coffee is taken seriously and hanging around for a little longer is entirely encouraged.

The name comes from the owner’s mother, Lucia, whose kitchen was always full and whose table was always open. That idea carries into the café itself: good food, proper coffee and the feeling that meals are supposed to be shared rather than rushed through.

In a precinct with no shortage of places to get caffeinated, it’s a nice reminder that sometimes what makes a café stick isn’t just what’s in the cup.

It’s how comfortable you feel ordering another one.

THE FROG CLUB — WINDSOR

Windsor has a new answer to the question:

“Where can we get dinner without the night ending after dinner?”

The Frog Club has taken over the former Morris Jones site at 163 Chapel Street, bringing a European-inspired late-night bar and grill from the team behind Gilson.

The mood is old-school restaurant glamour without the stiffness. Think dry-aged steaks, seafood kissed by woodfire, brasserie-style burgers, serious cocktails, carefully chosen wine and a soundtrack that matters almost as much as what’s arriving at the table.

And this is very much a venue built for the part of the night when most restaurants start handing out bills.

The Frog Club has been designed around late dining, drinks and music — the kind of place where dinner is allowed to become several other things before anyone starts discussing going home.

Very Windsor, really.

NOO’S PADEL — SOUTH YARRA

Technically, Noo’s Padel snuck onto Chapel Street just before August.

We’re including it anyway.

Because six outdoor padel courts appearing in the middle of South Yarra isn’t exactly something we’re going to quietly move past.

Sitting at 402–416 Chapel Street, Noo’s is designed as much around the social side of padel as the actual game. There are six courts, open matches if you don’t have a group, beginner sessions, social mixers and memberships for anyone whose first game becomes a new personality trait.

And because sport is considerably more appealing when coffee is involved, there’s specialty coffee from 7am plus a terrace for the post-match debrief.

Courts are open daily from 7am until 10.30pm, so you can play before work, after work or at whatever point in the weekend somebody says, “Should we try padel?”

You probably should.

FIVE NEW REASONS TO TAKE ANOTHER LAP

That’s the thing about Chapel Street.

Just when you think you know your regular coffee order, your usual dinner spot and the shops you always duck into, something else opens its doors.

This month alone you can sweat and soak in Prahran, queue for a cookie in South Yarra, try a new neighbourhood café, play a few sets of padel and finish with steak and a Martini in Windsor.

Same Chapel Street.

A few more reasons to come back.
