Start with a little movement, follow it with a proper breakfast, give Chapel Street’s polished end a workout, then work your way from rooftop drinks to dinner underground.
South Yarra does days out a little differently. There’s coffee, obviously. But there’s also a good chance of a Pilates class, a new jacket, a beautifully wrapped gift you weren’t planning to buy and a rooftop drink appearing somewhere in the schedule.
This one’s mapped out for a Saturday, when you’ve got time to take it slowly. Follow the whole thing, pick the bits that sound like you, or abandon the plan the moment a shop window gets your attention.
Very South Yarra.
8AM – OPTIONAL: EARN YOUR BREAKFAST
If starting the weekend with a sweat sounds appealing, book yourself into Bodhi & Ride.
Tucked just off Chapel Street on Wilson Street, the South Yarra studio is built around high-energy indoor cycling, with everything you need to shower, reset and emerge looking considerably more put together than you felt 45 minutes earlier.
Not a morning exercise person?
Excellent. Meet us at breakfast.
9.30AM: BREAKFAST, PASTRIES, COFFEE. IN WHATEVER ORDER FEELS RIGHT.
Head to Rustica on Chapel Street.
The South Yarra flagship is part bakery, part café and very dangerous if you intended to order only coffee. Sourdough, pastries, crullers and a full breakfast menu are all being made under the same roof, so restraint feels unnecessarily ambitious.
Settle in for breakfast, grab something sweet for later, and let the coffee do the rest.
Want to take breakfast in a different direction? MiddleSouthEast at the northern end of Chapel Street brings Middle Eastern flavours into the Melbourne brunch equation, with dishes drawing on Lebanese and Assyrian family recipes alongside specialty coffee.
Either way, start properly. There is shopping ahead.
11AM: GIVE THE WARDROBE SOME ATTENTION
South Yarra’s stretch of Chapel Street has long had a particular talent for making your existing wardrobe feel suddenly inadequate.
For Australian womenswear, Scanlan Theodore brings its signature refined, modern approach to the strip, while KOOKAÏ covers everything from everyday pieces to outfits that already have dinner plans built into them.
For menswear, Jay Dillon mixes classic tailoring with colour, pattern and statement pieces, while SAM & KO has been dressing Melbourne men from its Chapel Street store for decades.
Then there’s Dyonsu, where tailoring, suits, occasionwear and sharp casual pieces come with the kind of personal service that makes “I just need a jacket” a much more involved proposition than expected.
The rule here is simple: browse slowly.
South Yarra shopping works better when you don’t treat it like a checklist.
12.30PM: SOMETHING FOR THE HOUSE. OR SOMEONE ELSE. ALLEGEDLY.
Before lunch, make a stop at Cristina Toscano Everything Food.
This is where gifting gets a little more serious: luxury hampers, specialty chocolates, pantry finds and homewares that turn “I should bring something” into an entire shopping category.
It’s excellent for birthdays, host gifts and people who are notoriously difficult to buy for.
It’s also excellent for buying something for yourself and calling it practical.
We support both.
1PM: LUNCH, WITH A SIDE OF ROOFTOP
By now, shopping bags are multiplying and breakfast feels like a distant memory.
Head to Stella Dining & Rooftop at 427 Chapel Street, a four-level Italian-inspired restaurant and bar that gives you several ways to do lunch depending on the mood.
Keep things casual downstairs with pizza straight from the oven and Italian favourites, or head upstairs and settle in for something a little longer. On a sunny day, the rooftop is particularly hard to argue with — greenery, cocktails, Chapel Street views and a menu designed for sharing.
The danger here is obvious: lunch can very easily become afternoon drinks.
Plan accordingly.
2.30PM: CHOOSE YOUR OWN AFTERNOON
This is where South Yarra gives you options.
If sitting still after lunch sounds unacceptable, book a court at Noo’s Padel on Chapel Street. With six outdoor courts, beginners welcome and a café and terrace on site, it works whether you actually know what you’re doing or are mostly there to discover why everybody suddenly owns a padel racquet.
Bring a group, join an open match, then reward whatever athletic ability was displayed with coffee or some post-game terrace time.
Or keep wandering Chapel Street. There are still shops you haven’t been into, coffee you could reasonably justify and at least one window display capable of undoing all previous promises about not buying anything else.
No wrong answers here.
4.30PM: GO UP
By late afternoon, take things twenty-four floors higher at Beverly Rooftop.
Sitting above Chapel Street at Goldfields House, Beverly trades street-level bustle for big Melbourne views, cocktails and the kind of room that makes golden hour feel like an actual appointment.
Order something cold, watch daylight turn into evening and enjoy the very specific satisfaction of looking down at the shopping route you just survived.
One drink before dinner.
That’s the plan, anyway.
6.30PM: PICK YOUR DINNER MOOD
South Yarra isn’t short on ways to finish the food portion of the day.
For Italian with a little polish: if lunch at Stella only made you want more, you could very happily return to Stella Dining & Rooftop for dinner. Move upstairs to the cocktail dining level, order across its Italian-inspired menu and settle in for the evening.
For Japanese beneath Chapel Street: descend into Yūgen, where the dramatic multi-level dining room takes the day in an altogether moodier direction. This is the one for a slower dinner, dishes across the table and no particular desire to rush anywhere afterwards.
For a proper South Yarra pub: Temperance Hotel has been part of Chapel Street since 1868. Think pub classics, steaks, parmas, pizzas, cold beer and a neighbourhood atmosphere that works particularly well when nobody in the group wants dinner to feel too complicated. There are cosy booths, a beer garden and plenty happening throughout the week.
For cheeseburgers, fried chicken and very little pretence: duck around the corner to Leonard’s House of Love on Wilson Street. The brief is beautifully straightforward — cheeseburgers, fried chicken, cold beer and a party-bar atmosphere inside what feels more like somebody’s very fun house than a conventional restaurant.
It’s walk-ins only, which somehow makes the whole thing feel even more appropriate.
Fine dining. Pub dinner. Burger and a beer.
South Yarra contains multitudes.
9PM: PICK YOUR SOUTH YARRA AFTER DARK
Going home is one option.
There are others.
For cocktails without needing to shout over the room: Katuk has been pouring them on Chapel Street since 2007, with comfortable lounges, whisky and the sort of atmosphere that works whether you’re staying for one or settling in.
For a singalong that escalates quickly: Shout Piano Bar brings duelling pianos, audience requests and very little opportunity to remain quietly seated once the room gets going.
For another rooftop: head back to Stella, where the rooftop keeps Chapel Street and the city skyline in view as the night rolls on.
Or just stay at Leonard’s. Dinner there has a habit of solving the “where should we go next?” question for you.
Choose your ending.
Your morning self has no say in this anymore.
