Before this article had even started, we could feel the Melbournian eyes of judgement piercing through their screens. Coffee is quite possibly THE most important part of our lives, closely followed by #fashun and eating at every new restaurant before it’s reviewed by Broadsheet. And we’re passionate about it – especially when it comes to our favourites. But we digress.

The flat white is, of course, the snobbiest of the milky brews and best when ordered strong.  Now, read these words with the understanding that coffee is subjective, and while these are our top flat whites on Chapel Street – it doesn’t make them the flat out best, and if you disagree – let us know. At the top of your voice. While we won’t change this article – the support may earn you a freebie at your favourite coffee dealer on your next visit. Now let’s get down to business.

The Best Flat White

Deep in the Windsor end of Chaps, School of Seven Bells is a favourite for morning city bound travellers. While it’s proximity to the Windsor Train Station is an obvious plus, it’s actually the damn good coffee made with Artful Dodger that sets them apart. Your flattie will be served to you flat, white with just the teeeniest crown of foam/fluff/milky-goodness. It may even be handed to you by our favourite barista. You’ll know him when you see him – he’s the cute one.

The Best Flat White

South Yarra gets a hard time when it comes to coffee street cred. But it shouldn’t, especially with cafes like Two Birds One Stone. They use Five Senses in their brew so you can trust that it’s smooth, juicy and always hits the spot. It’s our go-to when hitting South Yarra boutiques.

The Best Flat White

Sideshow is the new kid on the street. It’s also the kid brother to Boy Who Cried Wolf in Cremorne, but obviously way cooler. Code Black Coffee fills their glorious cups, and if you need a little extra sustenance with your daily perk, they have Mill & Bakery donuts and pastries too. It’s a little off the beat, so could easily go unnoticed, but once you’ve been in and tried their coffee, you’ll return time after time.

The Best Flat White

The kings and queens of coffee on Chapel Street. They scour the world looking for the best beans, then bring them home to Melbourne to roast and blend. They’re legendary. Filter is their shining star, but Market Lane also serve a flat white that would make the angels cry. The only reason they’re not our numero uno is the lack of soy. That makes our dairy free friends sad.

The Best Flat White

Windsor strikes hot with killer cafes all within a 30 second walk of each other – but none are better than Journeyman. They have a pedigree in the specialty coffee scene & their baristas are world class. If you combine their meticulous preparation with Dukes Espresso house blend – you’re guaranteed to get a perfect flattie each and every time.
