Aftermath is the second venue from the team behind Hawthorn favourite Whiplash, bringing together the influences of English caffs and the Mexican-leaning diners of Los Angeles. The menu is built around comfort food with more care than the label might suggest: think huevos rancheros, braised beef tacos, British-style bacon sarnies, chipotle baked beans and hotcakes finished with maple-miso butter. Much of it is made in-house, right down to the cured pork belly, brown sauce and habanero-glazed churros.
The room keeps the diner references subtle, with booth seating, warm orange tones and low lighting rather than full-blown retro theatre. Music is just as much part of the identity, with blues, funk, jazz and ’70s rock on rotation alongside coffee and breakfast. The result is a Greville Street spot that feels familiar without being predictable, part caff, part diner, part neighbourhood hangout.
