Itching to break the monotony without breaking the bank? Chapel Street is home to oodles of affordable fun for adventurers of all ages. You can pull up a patch of grass in one of the many nearby parks and gardens, tuck into some authentic cheap eats from the local market, bag a bargain in an op shop, or simply window shop to your heart’s content. Adventure on a budget.

Frankly, 2020 has felt like something fresh out of a sci-fi novel, so in the spirit of out-of-this-world experiences, strap yourself in because the Chapel Street Precinct is set to become home to a ship load of jaw-dropping and mind-boggling guests in the New Year! We’ll be adding an army of larger than life 17-metre space robots to the precinct between 14 to 31 January, 2021. Click here for robot locations.

Noted frequently as some of the best op shops in Melbourne – Sacred Heart Missions Op Shops have a unique personality and stock that reflects the spirit of the local community, adding a little local quirk to the shopping experience. Head to their Commercial Road shop for designer clothes, bags, shoes and jewellery and their Chapel Street store for incredible sales on furniture.

Shanghai Street on Chapel (Windsor)

Winner of the Cheap Eats 2012 Awards and proclaimed by many as serving the best dumplings ever. A true representation of Shanghai street food, the noodles and fried rice are incredible, but it’s the dumplings that will keep you coming back. The texture, the filling and the quick and friendly service will have you questioning how it’s such good value.

Artists Lane Art Walk (Windsor)

Running parallel to Chapel Street is Artists Lane (Aerosol Alley to southsiders), a long bluestone alley splattered in street art. The project was initiated by artist Wayne Tindall, who started by painting himself and his wife outside his studio in the laneway before getting other artists involved, with the blessing of the local Council. Look for the painted bins and colour-splashed walls. Featuring artists include @luckylucks@conrad_bizjak@resio_@mikeyxxi and @_bailer. For more street art in Chapel Street Precinct, check out the full list here. The best part? This adventure doesn’t cost you a thing!

N Tran Bakery (Prahran)

N Tran is the best bargain bun for your lunch time Chapel Adventure with nothing over $10 (even with all those added extras!). For some serious Vietnamese salad roll satisfaction, you cannot go past this true Chapel Street staple. If you’re in a rush, the service at N Tran is the easiest in-and-out scenario you could ask for, and the filling options are extensive, which will likely find you going back time and time again with the other local N Tran addicts.

You can get a food and drink deal every night of the week at Temperance. Our fave is Taco Times Thursday to Saturday 6pm to 8pm, where you can fill up on Mexican share plates on arrival and two hours of included coronas, margaritas, and wine for $59. They also do nightly drink specials, like $10 Espresso Saturdays, Sunday Sesh $7 drinks all day and $10 cocktail Thursdays. They also do 4pm happy hour with $4 drinks. Goes up a $1 each hour and ends at 8pm.
