As long as there’s been fitness – there have been fads and some pretty crap ones at that. I’m looking at you vibrating belly belts… With so many options out there, how do you know the good from the bad? Which is right for you and what you wanna achieve? Luckily I’m here to help. You’re welcome.

F45 classes are 45 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training, 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off – mixing strength and cardio, to give you an all round workout that’s probably a better option than a cheeky beer on your lunch break.

There’s a reason you see it all over your Instagram and Facebook. It works. Whether you want to pack on some lean muscle, rip up or hit the d/floor without having to catch your breath every few minutes – get on board the F45 train. If it’s good enough for Hugh Jackman, it’s good enough for you.

A perfect mix of all over cardio and strength – Boxing classes generally last between 45-60 mins of circuit style HIIT training that pushes to your physical and mental limit, made even more fun by walking into a class, fully robed up, with your fave pump up track blasting out of your iPhone (mine was Kendrick Lamars’ ‘Humble’ – for those of you playing at home)

If seeing Michael B Jordan in Creed isn’t enough motivation (he boxed 3 hours a day to prep), gains in upper body strength, core strength, quickness and agility, cardio and improved posture all at the same time hopefully will be. If not, pretending that punching bag is your boss should be the kicker.

Unlike F45 which uses everyday functional movement (ie. things you do in every day life) for a set period of time. Crossfit is more random, fast paced movements using Olympic lifting and gymnastic style movement, focusing on a set number of reps.

How can you tell if someone does crossfit? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. And so they should. Strength, size and cardio – if that’s what you’re after, you’ll be telling people you do Crossfit before you know it.

Focusing on strength, body control, flexibility and core strength with the help of resistance machines – Pilates is (typically) a 60 minute full body workout that’ll leave your abs tighter than you, the week before payday

Apart from the fact you’ll see everyone from professional dancers to the Melbourne Storm training at Kaya, Pilates is perfect for the long, lean, overall strong muscle tone – without the bulk, with the flexibility that will help you grab the annoyingly out of reach TV remote during a rainy Sunday Netflix sesh.

Only got half an hour? The Japanese Tabata is where it’s at. 20 seconds of work (as easy as push ups or sprints) followed by 10 seconds of rest. Do that another 7 times and move onto the next exercise station – 6 workout stations all up, and you’re done. Now, I’m no mathematician, but that’s a 32 minute workout.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) isn’t just quick – it’s effective, awesome for building lean muscle, a thousand times better than running on a treadmill for an hour (percentage not accurate, but you get it) and the best bit? You’ll keep burning fat for hours, so you won’t feel guilty smashing that ice-cream on the couch after dinner tonight.

Balance, endurance, strength, spirituality, and some really physical movement – your typical Yoga sesh is a 60 minute ordeal that will challenge your mind, body and soul.

The most common question – ‘What’s the biggest difference between Yoga and Pilates?’. Yoga is purely body weight. Classes can either be mind nourishing or ‘full marathon in a sauna style’ challenging. It’s also amazing for that old footy injury (or the stress that someone will find out the ‘footy injury’ is actually from a Wednesday night mixed netball game at South Yarra Sports Centre).

You don’t have to be chasing Cadel Evans to get involved. BodyCycle is a 45 minute, high intensity/low impact class that’ll give you flashes of being at Pawn & Co on a Saturday night, without the hangover or damage to your bank account.

Perfect for dropping a couple of kg’s and expanding that fitness tank without putting any stress on your dodgy knee – all while hiding the fact you skipped leg day again this week.

Would you cook a massive feast and throw it? You’ve done the hard work, so why not capitalise? It’s the same with supplements. Yeah, they might freak you out, but all you really need are a no frills Whey Protein to repair and build muscle, Omega 3 Fish Oils to keep lean, and Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s) for a sweet recovery.
