The Emerson’s famous rooftop is transforming into a glowing Asian utopia – with a little help from their neighbours Susie Wong – tempting Melbourne’s social set to venture outdoors during the chilly season.
‘Winter in Asia’ is a six week-long series that sees the establishments collaborate to offer warming regional south-east Asian and Japanese bites, in place of The Emerson’s regular rooftop menu. Forget heli-skiing the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas or defrosting in a steaming Japanese onsen hot spring. Susie Wong owner and chef Peter Capurso has designed a menu of delectable dumplings, rice paper rolls, banh mi and teppanyaki skewers to warm heat-seekers up from the inside out.
Will you choose soft-shell crab banh mi with yuzu mayo or scallop, prawn and goji berry siu mai dumplings with black vinegar dressing? The sweet-toothed are forgiven for skipping straight to dessert when Peter’s bitter chocolate cardamom fondant with vanilla bean sorbet and mandarin dust is on the menu. Rare Japanese whiskies, sake and cocktails featuring Asian flavours will also be on offer.
If that’s not hot enough, the luxurious rooftop space at The Emerson is fully enclosed and generously heated to combat Melbourne’s notoriously fickle weather while still retaining expansive views. During ‘Winter in Asia’, the space will morph into an Eastern wonderland via snow dusted-sakura blossoms and colourful paper lanterns. The event will take full advantage of a purpose-built teppanyaki grill behind the bar.
‘Winter in Asia’ will also help to dump domestic violence…via dump-lings! Each Thursday only, you can choose to participate in the ‘Dump DV Challenge’ to see how many dumplings you can eat in two minutes. A time-keeper from The Emerson will be keeping score and each night’s victor will receive two tickets to The Footy Show, while the overall champion is in for a surprise. Entry is $25 and all proceeds go Jimmy Bartel’s anti-domestic violence campaign.
Plus, if you Instagram your ‘Winter in Asia’ experience, you could score $1000 to spend on travel. Wonder where in the world you’ll go?
Winter in Asia at The Emerson with Susie Wong is on now until 28th August at 145 Commercial Road, South Yarra.
